A Southern Season… Not what you expect!

I can’t believe it’s almost been two months since my last post. During that time, I quit my job in Pittsburgh and moved with my spouse to North Carolina. And what better way to talk about my new experiences in Morrisville, NC than with my first trip to A Southern Season.

Last Saturday, I trekked out to Chapel Hill, NC and went to the University Mall for the first time. The first stores I went in were great! I found a small cooking shop where I picked up some hard to find gadgets and I bought two pairs of jeans at Roses for $10 each. But nothing could have prepared me for “A Southern Season.” From far away, I first thought the store would be one of those southern stores with things like lawn chairs, wind chimes, planters, and junk for your home. Boy, was I ever wrong!

Turns out, that a Southern Season is a nationally recognized award-winning retailer of gourmet gift baskets and samplers, international gourmet foods, Vietri, and North Carolina specialties. This place was right up my alley.

From the moment I walked in, I was in total awe. There was row after row of specialty foods, a deli, a bakery, a cheese shop, and an entire store within the store of cooking utensils, supplies, and gadgets.

The top floor had what I will call a “cooking stadium” where I think there was enough room to host an Iron Chef match. There were also 4 or 5 grocery story length rows of ready to go gift baskets. This would be the perfect place to stop if you needed a quick present for someone.

But what impressed me the most was their wine section. It was the size of a small warehouse and had row after row, and bin after bin of some of the best wines I have every seen for sale. Each part of the world had it’s own little section where you could find bottle after bottle as far as your eye can see.

Now here’s the problem, I bought three bottles of fairly good priced wine. But I am afraid to open them. I am waiting for a special occasion to try one out. I don’t think I am going to serve a $40 bottle with a dinner I make at home no matter how good that might be. So now I have to wait for a very good day at work or maybe I can reward myself after a rather stressful day at work with a bottle. Or maybe I should just go back again and pick a few more up so I won’t have such a difficult decision to make.

I think this post could go on and on if I keep describing everything at the store. So why don’t I just give you the link and you can check it out yourself.
